Summary of the decision

VA-04-05-156 — James Lee Burch

Request: Variance in R-1 (single family-5,000 sq. ft. lots) zone to construct carport addition to existing detached garage with overall square footage of 1,000 sq. ft. in lieu of 500 sq. ft.

Decision: Denied

Hearing: The applicant wants to expand his existing detached garage for an overall square footage of 1,000 sq. ft. in lieu of 500 sq. ft. The applicant collects antique cars and needs additional storage for these vehicles. In February of 2004, a code amendment was adopted addressing architectural design standards for accessory buildings. The construction materials of the proposed addition are not in compliance with these standards. In addition, the BZA felt that the proposed overall square footage was excessive for a residential lot of this size and the precedent that would be established since no other variances have been granted within this area.
