Summary of the decision
VA-22-11-111 — Susan Cosens
Request: Variance in the R-1A zoning district to allow a carport addition with a north front setback of 8 ft. in lieu of 25 ft.
Decision: Approved
Hearing: SYNOPSIS: Staff described the proposal, including the location of the property, the site plan, and photos of the site. Staff provided an analysis of the six (6) criteria and the reasons for a recommendation for denial since there are other options for a lesser Variance that would be more consistent with front setbacks of the surrounding properties. Staff noted that five (5) comments were received in favor of the application, and one (1) comment was received in opposition to the application. The applicant discussed the staff recommendation and the reasons for the need to install a carport. There was no one in attendance to speak in favor or in opposition to the request. The BZA discussed the applicant having other options and the proposed location of the carport within the front yard. The BZA made a motion to deny the application, which failed by a 2-4 vote, with one absent. The BZA recommended approval of the Variance by a 4-2 vote, with one absent, subject to the five (5) conditions in the staff report.
