Summary of the decision
VA-02-08-100 — White's Red Hill Groves, Inc.
Request: Variances in R-1A (single family-7500 sq. ft. lots) zone to replace existing legal non-conforming sign as follows: 1. 17 ft. high pole sign in lieu of 8 ft. high ground sign; 2. 39 sq. ft. of copy area in lieu of 32 sq. ft. (NOTE: Existing sign was removed due to road widening of Conway Road).
Decision: Approved
Hearing: The business is a retail citrus and distribution company approved by the County in 1962. An older pole sign had existed on-site until the widening of Conway Road required its removal. The applicant's new sign does not meet current sign code requirements and necessitates a variance. The Code does not allow pole signs for businesses located in residential zones. The type and size is limited to ground signs at 8 feet in height, 32 square feet in size. The applicant requests for 6 square feet over the limit and wants a pole sign instead of a ground sign. The pole sign is needed for visibility due to an adjacent wall structure and several utility structures. The proposed sign design is aesthetically pleasing. Several commentaries were received in favor and one in opposition. The opposition was concerned about noise and light impacts from Conway Road. The BZA imposed the lighting condition to mitigate that concern.
