Summary of the decision

VA-03-04-042 — St. Paul's Presbyterian Church

Request: Variance in R-1A (single family-7,500 sq. ft. lots) zone to erect roof top appurtenance (cross) 58 ft. in height in lieu of 35 ft.

Decision: Denied

Hearing: "The applicant wants to attach a cross onto a pole which will be ground mounted. The top of the cross will be 58 feet from the ground. The applicant stated he was renovating the sanctuary and the cross would provide identification of the church. An adjacent resident spoke in opposition. He stated the church is already acknowledged in the community and does not need such a high cross. Staff expressed concerns about the height variance. Specifically, whether approval of this request would set a precedence for granting variances for pole type signage along I-4. The BZA felt the request did not comply with the variance criteria and concluded the applicant could attach the cross onto the side of the building without the need for any variance."
