Request: Amendment to an existing Special Exception in the A-2 zoning district to allow a detached crematorium building.

Hearing: SYNOPSIS: Staff described the proposal, including the location of the property, the site plan, photos of the site, and the outcome of the community meeting. Staff provided an analysis of the six (6) criteria and the reasons for a recommendation for approval. Staff noted that six (6) comments were received in favor of the application, and nine (9) in opposition to the application. The applicant agreed with the staff presentation and mentioned a brief history of providing funeral home and cremation services. There was no one in attendance to speak in favor or in opposition to the request. EPD staff described the requirements for the operation of cremation services and guidelines for compliance with code for human cremation units. The BZA discussed the process of cremation and the human cremation units, and unanimously recommended approval of the variance by a 7-0 vote, subject to the three (3) conditions in the staff report.
